Question 1

Tell me, how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey

The brakes should not feel spongy or slack, and should always be tested as you set off. The vehicle should also not pull to one side.

Question 2

Tell me, where would you find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car, and how should they be checked?

Recommended pressure can be found within the manufacturer’s guide. Explain how you would use a reliable pressure gauge, and check and adjust tyres when they are cold – don’t forget about the spare tyre and remember to refit valve caps.

Question 3

Tell me, how would you ensure that your head restraint is correctly adjusted so that it provides the best protection in the event of a crash?

The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid section is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as possible. Note: Some restraints may not be adjustable.

Question 4

Tell me, how would you check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe?

Ensure that there are no cuts or bulges. There should be a 1.6mm tread depth across the central 3-quarters of the breadth of the tyre, and around the entire circumference of the tyre.

Tell me, how would you check that the head and tail lights are working?

You don’t need to exit the vehicle. Explain that you would operate the switch, turning on the ignition if necessary, and then walk around the vehicle.

Question 6

Tell me, how would you know if there was a problem with you anti-locking brake system?

A warning light should illuminate if there is a fault.

Question 7

Tell me, how would you check that the direction indicators are working?

You don’t need to exit the vehicle. Explain that you would operate the switch, turning on the ignition if necessary, and then walk around the vehicle.

Question 8

Tell me, how would you check that the brake lights are working on this car?

Explain that you would operate the brake pedal and make use of reflections in windows and doors or ask someone to help.

Question 9

Tell me, how would you check that the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey?

If the steering becomes heavy, the system may not be working properly. Before starting a journey, 2 simple checks can be made:- Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.- Alternatively, turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power-assistance is functioning.

Question 10

Tell me, how would you switch on the rear fog lights and when you would use them?

You don’t need to exit the vehicle. Operate the switch, turn on dipped headlights, and check that the warning light is on. Explain use.

Question 11

Tell me, how would you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and how you would know it is on? 

Operate the switch, with the engine on if necessary, and check for main beam warning light.

Question 12

Open the bonnet and tell me, how would you check that the engine has sufficient oil?

Identify the dipstick and oil level indicator, and describe how you would check oil against the minimum and maximum markers.

Question 13

Open the bonnet and tell me, how would you check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant? 

Identify the high and low level markings on the header tank, where there is a fitted or radiator filler cap, and describe how to top up to the correct level.

Question 14

Open the bonnet and tell me, how would you check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?

Identify reservoir and check levels against high and low markings.

QUESTION 15

Tell me how you would check the parking brake (hand brake) for excessive wear, make sure you keep save control of the vehicle ?

Apply footbrake firmly. Demonstrate by applying parking brake (hand brake) so that when it is fully applied it secures it self, and is not at the end of the working travel. 

QUESTION 16

Open the bonnet and tell me, where the windscreen washer reservoir is and how you would check the windscreen washer level ?

Identify reservoir and explain how to check level.

  • When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you would open and close the side window?
